Mathematics

The mathematics department focuses much of its energy on the effective development of a student’s numeracy, reasoning, investigation and communication alongside seeking to foster an interest in mathematics and a sense of wonder of how mathematics describes the world and what it enables us to understand and discover.

From the start of year 7 students embark on learning mathematics which will build good foundations of skill and understanding for the mathematics required at GCSE.  Carefully planned curriculum pathways help the students to progress so that their target grades can be achieved or exceeded. The mathematics department prides itself on the quality of teaching and learning. Planning of lessons is meticulous and electronic, interactive teaching resources have been developed to a very high standard. Each lesson has differentiation throughout.

In lessons, it is the norm for students to discuss the work with their partners. They are also encouraged to be independent, show resilience, perseverance and to explore different ways of problem-solving in the classroom.

Progress assessment tests are set three times per year and further periods of assessment are dispersed evenly between these. To support students in their learning at home and in revision for tests and assessments, they are directed to visit the Hegarty Maths website for which log in details are provided.

Students are set homework twice a week and this is completed from exercises in designated homework booklets and the Hegarty Maths website.

Our strong team of teaching and support staff collaborate in a supportive, open department, with the team members maintaining high expectations for student success. Teaching pedagogy and good practice are regularly discussed at collaborative planning meetings and in the Teaching and Learning Communities.

Leader of Teaching and Learning for mathematics is Mrs Burton.
