Literacy

What is literacy?

Literacy is the ability to read, write, speak and listen in a way that lets us communicate effectively and make sense of the world.

The importance of literacy?

Literacy is important because it enables pupils to gain access to the subjects studied in school, to read for information and pleasure, and to communicate effectively. Competent literacy skills enable pupils to read, understand and access materials, so that pupils are able to achieve their educational potential in all subjects they are studying.

Literacy at Eckington School

Literacy skills are developed and embedded using a range of strategies and resources at Eckington. Students are challenged to read a variety of engaging and stimulating texts to develop their understanding and imagination in addition to exposing them to exciting and ambitious vocabulary. Development of writing skills is an integral part of learning and students are expected to write in a range of styles for a variety of purposes across all subjects, with a focus on demonstrating secure and confident literacy skills.
