Curriculum

The learning experience we provide supports and promotes every child’s needs and aspirations. This gives all our students the opportunity to enjoy and achieve. Our goal is that our students leave us with the skills and qualities to be effective participators in the modern world and we have shaped our curriculum to help learners achieve this. At Eckington School no child is left behind and no child is held back.

Key Stage 3

All our students follow a full programme of National Curriculum subjects, which is designed to better allow our students to make progress and succeed. Equipping students with the core skills of literacy and numeracy drive our curriculum design. We ensure that substantial time is devoted to the national curriculum core subjects, without losing sight of the benefits of promoting a broad and balanced curriculum that allows all young people to thrive regardless of their talents and interests.

Key Stage 4

At GCSE level, students continue with the core subjects of English (English language and literature), maths, science and physical education. All of our students study at least one humanities subject (geography or history) or a modern foreign language (French or German). GCSE (or equivalent) options include art & design: fine art, art & design: photography, business, design technology: product design, drama, health and fitness, health & social care, hospitality and catering, imedia, media studies, music, performing arts, physical education and religious studies.

Of equal value to us as providing our students with access to a wide range of academic and applied qualifications, is the development of our students’ character. To this end, we also provide an ethics curriculum which promotes personal, social and health education, careers and enterprise, citizenship and religious education. This is delivered through a discrete weekly lesson and a series of flexible learning days.

Key Stage 5

We offer more than 20 level 3 academic and applied courses. Based in our dedicated Sixth Form Centre, students continue to develop as independent young adults, whilst remaining in a supportive and caring environment. In addition to studying, our post-16 students make a full contribution to the wider community of Eckington School, taking on student leadership roles and participating in a variety of enrichment activities. The employability of our students is also enhanced by guaranteed and relevant work experience for all students.
