It is important to be able to express your thoughts and opinions through writing, and to get your message across you need to be able to write clearly and fluidly. The links to the right have a variety of tips on improving your basic writing skills such as spelling and grammar and also tips on how to write fiction for pleasure or even make a living as a writer.

Spelling, grammar and punctuation are the cornerstones of good writing. When you are confident with these skills you can concentrate on what it is you want to say and not worry about being understood. Writing correctly is especially important when writing coursework or in exams as a proportion of the marks are given for your use of English.

Writing is useful throughout your life, in any career you will have to write reports and letters, you may even choose a career as a journalist or novelist. Joseph Pulitzer summed up good writing when he said "Put it before them briefly so they will read it, clearly so they will appreciate it, picturesquely so they will remember it, and above all, accurately so they will be guided by its light."
