Tilly Simpson: U15 Girls 800m English Schools Champion
Congratulations to Tilly Simpson in year 10 on her recent sporting achievements. This year, Tilly (who runs for the Hallamshire Harriers and trains at Woodbourn Road and EIS) has won national championships and rewrote records that have stood for almost 30 years.
She has competed this year in the under 15 age group and started the year with a strong cross country season where she became the Derbyshire Schools, Yorkshire County and North of England champion. Tilly then went on to win a bronze medal at the national championships, and win a bronze medal while representing Yorkshire at the national inter-counties match. These performances earned Tilly her spot on the England team where she won a silver medal running against the best runners from Scottish, Welsh and Irish schools.
At the same time, Tilly was having a record breaking indoor season as she won the 800m at both the North of England Championships and the National Championships where she currently holds the championship records at both, making her the fastest under 15 girl to ever run at these championships. Her indoor national record for 800m is 2:09.11.
Following on from an incredible cross country and indoor season, Tilly was selected to run for her district in the London mini marathon where she was the regional winner and overall silver medallist.
With her achievements so far this year, Tilly had set herself up for an outstanding outdoor season where she started with yet another record breaking performance as she became the double Yorkshire Champion and broke the championship record in both the 800m and the 1500m. She then became the Derbyshire Schools champion, qualifying for the English Schools Championships and breaking the county record. The time that Tilly qualified with was well over 10 seconds under the qualifying standard which is designed to be difficult for people to reach therefore this shows how outstanding Tilly's form was in the run up to the championships. Then, representing Derbyshire, Tilly won the Mason Trophy inter-counties match, also setting a new championship record.
Tilly represented Derbyshire at the English Schools Championships where she became the English Schools champion - joining a long list of previous champions which includes Jessica Ennis-Hill and Mo Farah. Even more impressive, Tilly broke the championship record which has stood since 1986 and she became the fastest all-time U15 girl 800m runner in the UK. Her outdoor national record for 800m is 2:06.22, a time that would have won the senior girls 800m at English schools.
Over the summer she became the Northern 800m champion and set new record followed a few weeks later at the National Championships in Bedford where she became National Champion and broke this record to add to her list of national records.
Tilly's achievements so far this year have been incredible and we are all very proud of her. We wish her the best of luck for the rest of the season as the North of England and national outdoor championships are rapidly approaching.
Well done Tilly, keep the record-breaking performances going!
