Chain Reaction National Conference

Y8 students with their project

Seventeen intrepid scientists from Year 8 recently took part in the "Express Yourself" conference held at Sheffield Hallam University.

Two groups of students presented their investigative work, one on the comparison of volcanoes on Earth and Mars, the other on the Big Band Theory.

The presenters explained their experimentation to hundreds of school pupils, university students and lecturers. The rest of the Year 8 team displayed their findings on posters and the audience asked questions about their studies.

The judges thought the presentations were excellent, particularly as they were Year 8 students competing against Year 10 students, but when the marks were added up the Volcano presentation was found to be 0.4 of a mark away from the top spot. A trophy for the runners up position is being displayed in school before being shown to parents.
